Although the Jewish legacy in Granada is not as evident as in other cities, their presence has left a deep mark since the dawn of history, and it is time to discover it.

The history of the Jews in Granada is an exciting and challenging one, full of ups and downs, splendour and decadence. In the 10th century, Granada was known as Garnata Medinat al-Yahaud or the village of the Jews. During the 11th century, the Jewish community flourished and reached its peak thanks to the Jewish vizier Shamuel ha Naguid, who played a fundamental role in the development and splendour of the city. Poets such as Moshe Ibn Ezra and Ibn Gabirol passed through and were inspired by the city. It was a city of refuge for some Jews during the Nasrid dynasty (AH 13th-14th), the last kingdom of al-Andalus. Here they found protection and a place where they could keep their culture and religion alive.

The year 1492 marked a turning point in the history of Granada and of the Jewish community of the Jews of Sepharad. After the capture of Granada, the last kingdom of Al-Andalus, the Catholic Monarchs promulgated the Edict of the Alhambra, which demanded the conversion to Christianity or the expulsion of the Jews. This was a momentous moment for the Jewish community on the Iberian Peninsula, marking the end of a millennia-old community on the Iberian Peninsula and ushering in forced conversions and Sephardic communities outside the peninsula.

Today, as you wander the cobbled alleyways and admire the magnificent monuments of Granada, you can immerse yourself in a journey back in time that connects you with the past and invites you to reflect on the importance of coexistence and respect for the diverse cultures that have left their mark on this wonderful city. Granada is a historical jewel that holds exciting stories to discover, and our tour will take you through each one of them.
